Julia Peirone, Twisted Cherry (2015) Stureplan, Stockholm, 2015

On Thursday 5 November 2015 between 17-20, Julia Peirone showed Twisted Cherry on the digital billboard at Stureplan in Stockholm.

Curator: Susanne Fessé

The work consisted of moving images filmed from real photo sessions of young girls who fall to the ground in high heels repeatedly. A separate text strip above the board shows sentences such as: "I am humble. I'm stable. I have pale skin", which were taken from application letters that the artist received from models for the work.

Stureplan has become a symbol for the superficial part of us as individuals and does not invite the defective. Most people are there to consume, work or have fun. Peirone's work creates a disruptive impression in the public space, as the billboard is intended for commercial messages. The work is of a social, feminist, political character as it highlights young women's relationship to fashion, appearance and the place it is displayed. Peirone relates to the art world as a place as she currently opts out of the gallery room.

The series Twisted Cherry (photographs) that was shot in the film is now in the Moderna Museet's collection. The work was part of the project Expanding Photography No. 1-3 which is carried out between October – December 2015 with support from the City of Stockholm and in collaboration with CFF — Center for Photography. Thanks also to Galleri Magnus Karlsson and Iréne Berggren.
